Being Downsized is a Disaster

Part of the reason I’ve never felt like a silly person for preparing for disasters is because preparing for problems helps you handle many problems.  I was fired yesterday.  And now I will use my food stockpiles to lessen the effects of this change in life.  I will, of course, be searching for new work but I’d rather draw down my supplies than purchase new food when I’m in a time of need.  I realize this diminishes my ability to handle a second disaster should it occur and I will never drop below my 72 hour supply limit.  But I typically try to plan for a 3 month outage which means I have a large amount of supplies always on hand that I’m always using anyhow just to keep the rations up to date.  Consider this an exercise in using my 3 month supplies to learn more about areas where I may not have considered important in the past.

It was very heartening to receive a newspaper flyer and prepare a meal plan and find that I only wanted to purchase 2 items and those decisions were based purely on loss leader prices.  Sure, I’ll buy strawberries and canned peas since I don’t have either on hand and they’re both dirt cheap.  But that’s a $5 purchase for 14 servings of fruits and vegetables.  I’ve also purchased an item I’ve wanted for months but never actually purchased.  It’s a bicycle handlebar mount that resizes to hold different items.  This will allow me to mount my current, but dated and damaged, GPS and when I do replace it it will also hold whatever new GPS I find.  This let’s me run errands cheaper than my average $15 daily gas bill and the gadget is only $12.  So the first day I use it, it will pay for itself!
